Trandoshan Sith (Star Wars)

Project Category

Commission

Date

2020

A commission for SaberForge, a retailer of high-quality replica lightsaber weapons from Star Wars. They wanted three themed costumes to be displayed on alien mannequins to promote different lightsaber models. I was responsible for everything from the design and fabrication to the weathering.

For this ensemble, the client wanted a dark and distinctly Japanese style, reminiscent of ninjas or samurai. The mannequin was to represent a Trandoshan, a reptilian species known for its martial prowess, so I deliberately chose fabrics with a scale-like texture. I researched traditional samurai clothing and decided on a combination of jinbaori-gashira (a vest worn over armor), hakama (traditional trousers), and hakama-do (a matching light kimono). A graphic sash was added for the fantasy look.

Richly textured silk and cotton blends give the costume a menacing and sophisticated feel. The sash was painted with silk paint using a custom-made and designed airbrush stencil.

The raw armor is from LionsDen Studios (Etsy) and was provided by SaberForge – I only did the painting and weathering.
